Color as magical correspondence is not primarily an aesthetic choice. It is a system of association built over centuries, derived partly from the natural properties of colors (red as blood, black as night, white as bone or snow), partly from the symbolic conventions of the cultures that developed and transmitted the system, and partly from the practical fact that dyes have always had symbolic weight. Color correspondence in the Western magical tradition draws on Greek and Roman planetary symbolism, medieval Christian symbolic use of color, and folk practice across northern Europe.
The system presented here represents the most widely shared associations in the contemporary Western magical tradition. Regional and cultural variation exists; what appears here are the convergences, not exhaustive ethnographic documentation. Philip Ball's Bright Earth (2001) is an excellent starting point for understanding how color symbolism developed historically.

Color in the Dye Pot
In hand-dyeing, the relationship between color intention and color production is direct in a way that's relatively unusual in magic: you're physically creating the color as part of your working. The choice of a red dye for a protection working isn't simply selecting a red yarn from a rack; it's being present for the production of the red through heat, acid, and dye chemistry.

Planetary Associations
Each planet rules a color range in classical Western astrology, and these associations carry over into magical practice:
Sun: Gold, yellow, orange. Solar work, confidence, clarity, abundance, authority.
Moon: White, silver, pale blue. Lunar timing, intuition, the unconscious, water, cycles.
Mercury: Orange, mixed colors, yellow. Communication, travel, intellectual work, divination.
Venus: Green, copper, pink. Love, fertility, art, beauty, pleasure, the natural world.
Mars: Red, scarlet. Protection, courage, banishing, active defense, physical vitality.
Jupiter: Blue, purple. Expansion, abundance, wisdom, legal matters, spiritual growth.
Saturn: Black, dark brown, grey. Binding, endings, structure, time, ancestors, death, discipline.
Pluto (modern addition): Black, deep red, violet. Transformation, the underworld, death and rebirth, shadow work.

Using Color in Fiber Magic
Color selection in a magical project functions on multiple levels: the color of the yarn carries its correspondence through the finished object; the colors you work with during knitting or weaving carry their energy through the process; and the color choices signal to your own unconscious the intention of the work.
A protection shawl worked in black wool is carrying the Saturnine protective correspondence through every stitch. A healing piece worked in blue and white is working with lunar and water energy throughout its making. This is one of the arguments for knitting or crocheting magical objects rather than simply purchasing them: the process itself is part of the working.
