Correspondences / Herbs

Herbs in magical practice are not primarily symbolic. They carry actual volatile compounds, essential oils, and chemical constituents that produce measurable effects on the environment, the body, and the mind. Lavender is calming in part because of its linalool content; mugwort affects dreams in ways that may have to do with thujone acting on the nervous system; rue has been used as a vermifuge and abortifacient, which is why it appears in both folk medicine and folk magic for protection and "clearing." Understanding what plants actually do is not in conflict with understanding their magical use; the two layers of knowledge are compatible and mutually illuminating.

In fiber magic specifically, the question of how to incorporate herbs is a practical one. Some methods of use are appropriate to knitting and spinning contexts; others are not. Below, each herb entry includes a note on method of use in fiber craft.

Safety note: Some herbs listed here are toxic if ingested, irritating to skin, or hazardous in enclosed spaces. Notes are included where relevant. When in doubt, keep herbs out of fiber that will touch the skin directly, and don't spin or knit in an enclosed space with large quantities of dried herb.

A Note on Herb Safety in Fiber Work

Most herbs used in poppets, sachets, or bundles near your work are safe as dried material in those amounts. The primary risk categories to know:

Phototoxic when skin-applied: Rue, St. John's Wort. Don't make a skin-contact sachet with these. Altar use and poppet stuffing (not worn against skin) is fine.

Toxic if ingested: Holly berries, mistletoe berries, wormwood in large quantities. Keep away from children and animals.

Strong fumes: Wormwood, mugwort burned in significant quantities. Burn in ventilated spaces only.

Drug interactions: St. John's Wort has significant interactions with antidepressants, anticoagulants, and other medications. This applies to ingested forms; dried herb in a poppet is not a risk.
