Divination

Spells / Divination

Divination is not prediction. The confusion of the two is one of the most common misunderstandings about the practice, and worth clearing up at the start: divination is not a claim to foreknowledge of fixed future events. It is a practice for accessing information that is not available through ordinary conscious awareness, including patterns in your own thinking, emotional states you haven't fully acknowledged, and the probable trajectories of current situations.

The tools of divination, tarot, runes, scrying, pendulum, tea leaves, and many others, work as systems for bypassing the filtering that ordinary consciousness applies to information. They create a structured random event (a draw, a throw, a pool of shifting water) and invite you to project meaning onto it. What gets projected is what was already in your unconscious waiting to be seen. This is not a diminishment of divination; it's an accurate description of what it's doing and why it works.

Fiber magic has specific applications in divination practice.

Correspondences

Colors: Purple (the primary divination color; spirit, the unseen), silver (the mirror's surface, the reflective, the lunar), indigo (deep vision, the night sky, the spaces between stars). See Color Correspondences.

Herbs: Mugwort (the preeminent divination herb; promotes vivid dreams and psychic clarity; burn as incense or use in a pillow near your head during divination sleep), wormwood (similar to mugwort; Samhain associations; associated with Hekate in the Greek tradition), yarrow (traditional divination herb in both Chinese and European traditions; the I Ching was originally cast with yarrow stalks), bay laurel (historically associated with the oracular tradition of the Pythia at Delphi). See Herb & Plant Correspondences.

Crystals: Amethyst (the psychic stone; promotes clear seeing, reduces the noise of ordinary consciousness), labradorite (the stone of the veil; particularly appropriate for work at liminal times), moonstone (lunar intuition, the dreaming), clear quartz (clarity and amplification of whatever you're looking for). See Crystal & Stone Correspondences.

Timing: Samhain (the thinned veil). Wednesday (Mercury's day; communication, transmission, reception). The dark moon for the deepest seeing. See Planetary Hours & Days and Samhain.

Element: Water (the unconscious, the depths, the mirror) and Air (the reception, the clarity, the transmission).

Fiber: Purple silk or wool held during divination; indigo yarn worked into a cloth placed on the reading surface.

Fiber in Divination Practice

Holding fiber during readings: Holding a length of purple or indigo wool while doing a tarot or rune reading occupies the hands and quiets the analytical mind, allowing the intuitive faculty more room. This is a simple and effective practice.

Dream pillows for divination sleep: A small pillow stuffed with mugwort and lavender, kept near the head, is a traditional tool for inducing clearer and more memorable dreams. Add amethyst chips to the stuffing for stronger psychic reception. See The Poppet for general instructions on making small stuffed objects.

Knitting as divination: There are traditions of reading signs in knitting: where errors occur in a piece, what images emerge in the pooling of a variegated yarn, what patterns appear in a fiber that was knitted intuitively without a set pattern. This is a less formalized practice but has precedent in the broader tradition of reading pattern in material processes.

Scrying cloth: A dark cloth knitted or woven from deep indigo or black wool, used as the surface for a scrying mirror or for laying out tarot cards, creates a consistent ritual surface that accumulates the intention of repeated divination sessions.

On the Dark Moon

The dark moon, the two or three days before the new moon when the sky is moonless, is the traditional time for the deepest and most truthful divination. There is no reflective light in the sky; the dreaming is unmediated. What you see at the dark moon, in a reading or in your dreams, is not softened. Work with what arrives rather than against it.
